i remember one of the great deceptions/
jokes ever to hit the mass media
and hardly anyone noticed

it was presented as a highly erotic
physically endowed female
that was totally clinical, logical,
rational and un-emotional --
surely that gives the game away,
there’s no such fuckin’ thing,
but to continue

the very male writers of a popular sci-fi series
created an ‘ideal female,’
intelligent, capable, hyper-rational,
packaged in an erotic, buxom body
complete with secretarial hairstyle
and always clad in form-fitting body suits

yes, indeed, for those that haven’t guessed
i am referring to Star Trek’s 7 of 9,
the perfect name (designation) for their
highly sexist creation

i hadn’t watched a lot of sci-fi
-- not my genre --
but made an exception
with that series, the character,
played to perfection by Jeri Ryan,
was superb and highly entertaining;
as a fellow writer i savoured things generally unnoticed
by the plebian population

so when the libido surges and instinct
tends to overcome reason
i play a DVD of the series and realise
i am chasing a writer’s fantasy,
an impossible dream
