with the focus
of a serpent ready to strike
and all the strength i could muster
i struck and severed
the tether that had anchored
me to the world

cast adrift,
free in the great cosmic expanse
i wondered why it took me
half a life-time to realise
i was bound by the absurdities
of culture and convention
